From Charleston go in the opposite direction just 3 miles and I-526 takes you to Daniel Island, which was been home to the Native American Etiwan tribe and early settlers who farmed and created some of the most productive plantations in the South. In 1947, it was sold to the Guggenheim family of New York, who used it for cattle grazing and as a hunting retreat. Since 1997, Daniel Island has been owned by the Daniel Island Company, and it continues to be developed in accordance with the master plan established by the Guggenheim Foundation. Though it is within the City of Charleston, Daniel Island has its own unique flavor. Surrounded by water and marsh, it is a place where the feeling of downtown and neighborhoods merge. Daniel Island is home to companies, such as Blackbaud and BenefitFocus.

Sports are a big part of the island. The Family Circle Tennis Center built in 2001 has 17 courts including the Volvo Car Stadium which for the past few years has hosted the Volvo Car Open. The Charleston Battery soccer team founded in 1993, is a member of the United Soccer League, they play in the MUSC Health Stadium.
