Mt. Pleasant

With a history stretching back to 1695, the coastal town of Mount Pleasant continued to grow until the Reconstruction Era after the Civil War and on through the Great Depression. Growth accelerated in the 1950’s with up to triple growth since then. According to the US census in 2015 Mount Pleasant was the fastest growing city east of the Mississippi. Being just minutes from the color and sophistication of downtown Charleston, Mount Pleasant is a thriving and rapidly growing suburban community with a delightful mix of old and new, traditional and modern. Here, residents enjoy lifestyle opportunities that are second to none.

Located on the eastern shores of Charleston Harbor, on South Carolina's central coast, Mount Pleasant is an outstanding location for business, including corporate and regional offices and the ever-growing medical complexes including Roper Mount Pleasant Hospital and East Cooper Medical Center.
Bordered by the Wando River, Charleston Harbor, and the Intracoastal Waterway, and bisected by Shem and Hobcaw Creeks, Mount Pleasant benefits from the cooling effects of the Atlantic Ocean breezes — just 10 miles from downtown Charleston and fewer than 100 miles from the cities of Sumter, Myrtle Beach, and Florence, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia.

No information about Mount Pleasant would be complete without highlighting Shem Creek. Docks, boats and a new park surround one of the most scenic spots in the Lowcountry. Restaurants dot the shore with views of kayakers and paddleboarders navigating the creek’s narrow waters. If you’re lucky you will see a porpoise and pelicans as man and wildlife coexist.

As in our discussion of Dunes West, a Mount Pleasant community, we again see the word Sewee. Prior to the Europeans arriving we know Native Americans had a Sewee village on the banks of Shem Creek for easy accessibility to the harbor. It was as important to them as it was to the Englishmen who began settling along the creek in the 1670’s.
