As in our discussion of Dunes West, a Mount Pleasant community, we again see the word Sewee. Prior to the Europeans arriving we know Native Americans had a Sewee village on the banks of Shem Creek for easy accessibility to the harbor. It was as important to them as it was to the Englishmen who began settling along the creek in the 1670’s.
